A guide for new managers: how to own your role and build a successful team

When I first became a manager, I was not very good at my job. I struggled to find the right balance, prioritize the right things, and communicate with the right people to make myself and my team successful.

It’s a big part of why I founded Popforms -- I know that smart people who are in leadership positions want to be amazing at their jobs, but it’s not always that easy. We all come to work to do a good job, but in leadership roles, what “doing a good job” looks like can be really unclear especially when you are new.

New managers are some of the people I hear from most often, both via this blog and through Popforms, so I wanted to create the kind of resource I always wished I had when I first became a manager that would answer their biggest questions all in one plance. Becoming a manager is a journey, but it’s not one you have to take alone. At Popforms, our whole mission is to make being really good at your job just a little bit easier — so that’s exactly what we did!

The New Manager Guide: A Four Step How-To For New Managers To Own Their New Role

We wrote a free, downloadable guide that is all about managing the biggest key principles of leadership so that you can get off to an awesome start in your first (or second or third…) management role!

The four key principles outlined in the book that are essential for new managers to master and implement are:

  • Managing up

  • Managing down

  • Setting a vision

  • Creating a feedback cycle

If you can get a handle on those four principles, you’ll be miles ahead of other new managers and well on your way to becoming the kind of outstanding senior manager you one day hope to become. We outline really simple how-to’s for putting all of these principles into action, so that you can start implementing changes in your leadership practice the very same day you read about them.

We also built worksheets that round out each chapter, so that you can begin to build up a strategy specific to your team and goals.
